Without the terrific work done by our volunteers Hand in Hand would not exist.
We have volunteers aged 18+ from all walks of life, to help at our Clubs - both are held on a Tuesday.
What do I do if I'm interested in Volunteering?
We are always happy to welcome new volunteers to both clubs. To find out more email . We will then arrange for you to visit one or both clubs and meet with Diane at Wallsend or Barbara at Heaton. If you decide you want to join us as volunteer we will then ask you to fill in the application form below
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to commit to a number of hours each week to volunteer at one of the clubs?
No, if you can give a weekly commitment that's great, but you can go on a rota and volunteer one day a month (or whatever availability you have). All we ask is that you let us know when you are / are not available so we can ensure we have enough cover.
Will I get my expenses paid?
We can reimburse any reasonable travel expenses.
I'm currently unemployed will this affect my benefits?
No, despite what people think it does not affect your benefits. It helps people gain back their confidence and makes them feel useful. It is also good for your CV.
Will I get my lunch at the Wallsend club?
Volunteers are welcome to join in and enjoy lunch with the members at no cost
Quotes from Volunteers
“Thank you so much for welcoming me into your group. I’ve treasured every Tuesday afternoon spent at the Wallsend Club. Having an opportunity to meet so many incredible people that I would not have otherwise met has made my university experience all the more special. You all do a job that you should be incredibly proud of! I hope that when I grow old there will be people like you who take the time to look after others. Family is important to me – being 4 hours away from mine can be difficult – but being able to spend time with you all every week has made Newcastle feel like home. Keep doing the fabulous job you’re doing and thank you for including me in what you do. I feel privileged to have worked with you all. I know that I’ll look on my time here fondly!"
“I’ve been with Hand in Hand since November 2012 and I’ve never looked back. I came to help in the kitchen at the Longbenton Lunch Club and after a coupe of months I did my first Lunch Club as cook and wow what a feeling of satisfaction as the members enjoyed what I had cooked. I now oversee the Club and cook every 4 – 5 weeks. Hand in Hand is part of my life now and I look forward to going to the Club. I always come away with a sense of pride that I have done something which means a lot to members. My only negative would be I wish I had started volunteering at the group earlier……..”
“Volunteering with Hand in Hand has been the best decision I’ve made since retiring!"
“I came on placement from College and stayed! – I love it”
“A life changing experience – for the better!”
“Volunteering has given me experience and confidence”
